Had they used diesel engines, it would've been a nice way of stretching their oil supplies, as amongst other things, diesel runs on alot of different types of fuel (alcohol, vegetable oil, heating oil, etc) while petrol can only run on petrol. Petrol engines, meanwhile, are basically just faster than diesel engines, so if anyone has the resources for it (oil, spare parts in excess), it's a definite plus. Then again, it's strange that the Germans would use petrol instead of diesel, considering that diesel engines have the advantage of less fuel consumption (especially important for the Germans) and more reliability (less prone to break down and easier to fix, a typical feature of Soviet equipment). I'm not sure why Patton (1988) said that they were diesel-driven, but every German tank since the Pz. The Russians used diesel, the Americans, Germans and English used petrol tanks.
